With the widespread use of the new whiz-bang computer aided design and graphics, there is a real tendency for designers to jump wildly into flights of improbable financial cost and equally spacey design. Having participated last year in the Trust for Public Space's Grand Army Plaza Design Competition, I was struck how every one of the winners both subsumed the historic landscape in a carapace of swooping mega structure and created solutions that would find the Sultan of an oil rich country hard pressed for cash. These competitions are admittedly for "big ideas" but one wonders if a little more pragmatism might see the public feel more inclined to push for the kinds of urban park corridors we need to be implementing.

There is an emerging strength to the movement of adaptive greening within our cities, as well as preserving larger landscapes and while it has run head-on into financial straits, the work of these landscape architects will hopefully keep the movement alive and well. Thanks and congrats to all of them.

An answer or two from ASLA: For the record, landscape architects are, in fact, part of this Forum on Urban Design, and James Corner, ASLA, sits on its board. He and other leading landscape architects were also featured in a keynote session at the 2008 ASLA meeting, and there are a number of programs planned for the 2009 meeting that are similar. We are thrilled to see the profession engaged in public discussion at such a high level, and we applaud the Forum for providing such an opportunity. ASLA issues an annual Call for Presentations each year and anyone interested in proposing a program may submit one for consideration. We urge anyone interested in pursuing a particular topic to do so.

This had to be the most profound public debate among professional landscape architects discussing public parks since Olmsted & Vaux won the commission for Central Park. I attended both evenings. Combined, both panels gave an elaborate view of the public process every new park facility goes through. The panels covered public design, funding, maintenance, public input, political process, even dinner conversations with people opposed to a new park!

Congratulations to the Forum for Urban Design for an excellent program. Too bad the New York State Board for Landscape Architecture won't give continuing education credit for this event, primarly because the F.U.D. isn't an approved education provider (it's not a school).

The other question is why isn't the ASLA sponsoring events like this? Why did an organization composed of developers, architects and urban planners sponsor this discussion? this type of panel wasn't even at the ASLA annual conference.
