Mr. Speck is right in pointing out that subsidizing gas keeps our society in a fantasy world and causes us to avoid choices that are healthy and sustainable in the long run. The current model of subsidizing agriculture also contributes to our sprawl. The replacement of native plant communities with buildings, exotic plant species and monocultures further degrades long term biodiversity and ecological cycles. Hopefully, we can move from using Smart Growth rhetoric to implementing truly sustainable planning.
