Correct! The US environmental regulatory framework is broken, battered by corporations and corrupted by politicians indebted to corporate donations.

LEED is far from perfect, but it is a small step in the right direction.

In Europe the precautionary principal applies. Regulation seeks to prevent chemical contamination of the environment until they are proved safe. The opposite is the case in the USA, where corporations can polute at will until the victims find enough evidence to sue their ass. When the class actions begin to overwhelm the courts, then and only then, does the government step in to regulate. That's the nature of small government.

Its hardly suprising that LEED, as an honest broker (in spite of the suits), would draw the ire of those with an interest in the status quo.

The USA has a long way to go to clean up its act, and not just its internal air quality. But cleaning up the internal air is a start.
