At least the landscape architects are practically all good looking in the movies--even Timothy Hutton. Straithain has a certain appeal, if weak chin. Actually better looking than Olmsted--or at least he had more hair than FLO did during the time he portrayed him. Don't get me wrong I ain't hating on bald men. Some of my best boyfriends were bald. Olmsted's older brother was the better looking one IMO, of course, he died young and then Fred married his sister-in-law . . . but that's another story.

Thanks, Susan! At least I know now that I wasn't imagining the whole thing. And believe me, now that I work in an association devoted to clinical researchers, it seems every profession has gripes about how its people are being portrayed in movies.

You are all forgetting "The Littlest Vampire" (2000) --this kid flick featured a little boy whose father was a landscape architect on a golf course assignment in Scotland. Yes, way ahead of the curve in terms of vampire movies.
@Gary you are think of Frederick Law Olmsted and the Public Park in America (1990). This PBS special examined the life and work of Olmsted, It combines documentary elements of Olmstead's life and work with location photography and dramatization by Strathain and others. Charles Beveridge of the Frederick Law Olmsted Paper Project consulted on the project and is listed as writer.

Of course, Jude Law in Breaking and Entering (2006) also comes to mind. Did not see that one, but willing to put him up against Simon Baker as best looking fictional LA EVER!

Sam Serafy wrote an interesting and funny review of B&E for LAM's old RipRap section back in . . .06?

I have this half-memory of seeing David Strathairn portray Olmsted in a dramatized documentary about Central Park, portions of which were shown in a course I took on the history of landscape architecture around 2001. I have never been able to find him credited anywhere for this role, however, or even figured out exactly what the full documentary was called.

Great read! I'm looking for this movie to also boost image of historic preservationists. Along those lines, I put together a list of preservation movies including, not limited to, Be Kind Rewind, 2 Weeks Notice, Sister Act 2, Up and Hot Fuzz.

In the 2006 film, 'You, Me and Dupree', Matt Dillon plays a frustrated landscape architect who works for his developer father-in-law, played by Michael Douglas, who changes one of his residential designs into a cook-cutter hell hole in order to please investors. Oh...how true!

Great news! I have only just visited Chicago and New York (Central Park IS everything I dreamt it would be) and am now half way through this captivating book.

More movies about landscape architects may hopefully put to rest my friends and family's questions about what I actually do for a career.
