Now living in Portland, Oregon, I'm originally from Chicago. I remember my mother going to the reopening of the Auditorium theater after it had been used as a bowling alley during WWII. Many years ago, I climbed through the ruins of the Marshall Field mansion on Prairie Ave; now that's a hot address. I lived in Logan Square while it was considered unsafe and gang controlled; it too is an upscale neighborhood. The depression destroyed many neighborhoods, but left alone, a new generation came along, loved their beauty and restored their life. Unfortunately, in many neighborhoods, urban renewal nailed their coffins shut. Now, more than ever, our population is shifting from the suburbs and preferring life in the city. I have faith that the best of Detroit will survive.
